If you used or were exposed to Roundup and were diagnosed with lymphoma, you may be eligible to file a claim for compensation from Monsanto. Thousands of Roundup lymphoma lawsuits have been filed against Monsanto (now owned by Bayer AG) alleging the company knew about the risks associated with its herbicide but failed to warn users that they could be at risk of developing non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma or other cancers.
At Patterson Dahlberg, we have seen the devastation caused when companies put profits ahead of people. We understand how incredibly traumatic and stressful this time is and we are here to help you gain justice for the harm done to you. We have extensive experience fighting against large companies and will use our specialized knowledge to fight to obtain the maximum compensation you are entitled to.
Roundup Cancer
Roundup has been available as a herbicide since the 1970s, but despite it being a toxin there has been little research on the chemical or its effect on people. Roundup’s active ingredient is glyphosate, and the chemical works by attacking a protein plants need to grow, but that is not found in mammals. As a result, Monsanto marketed Roundup as safe for human use.
Does Roundup Cause Lymphoma?
There is growing evidence, however, that glyphosate and Roundup are linked to an increased risk of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, a blood cancer. Studies are increasingly linking glyphosate to harmful effects and an international health agency recently classified glyphosate as probably carcinogenic to humans.
It is not yet known how Roundup and lymphoma are linked, but some researchers believe the herbicide could be an endocrine disruptor, cause immunosuppression or inflammation, or change a person’s genetics. Source: https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S1383574218300887
Roundup Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma
The bulk of claims regarding Roundup involve allegations that the herbicide caused consumers to develop non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. Non-Hodgkin lymphoma is a type of cancer that begins in the white blood cells (lymphocytes), which play a role in the immune system. Lymphoma can start at any part of the body that contains lymph tissues, including the lymph nodes, spleen and bone marrow.
The American Cancer Society does not specifically state that glyphosate is linked to non-Hodgkin lymphoma but does note that some studies suggest, “certain herbicides and insecticides may be linked to an increased risk of NHL.”
The society says that non-Hodgkin lymphoma accounts for approximately 4 percent of all cancers.
Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma Symptoms
Symptoms of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma:
- Swollen lymph nodes in the neck, armpits or groin
- Pain or swelling in the abdomen
- Pain in the chest
- Difficulty breathing
- Fatigue
- Night Sweats
- Unexplained weight loss
Roundup Cancer Research
So far, there has not been much research done on the link between glyphosate and cancer or Roundup and non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. As more research has been done, however, studies suggest a link between exposure to glyphosate and the development of non-Hodgkin lymphoma and indicate the herbicide warrants more thorough investigation.
A study conducted by researchers at the University of Washington suggested glyphosate exposure increased the risk of non-Hodgkin lymphoma by up to 41 percent. Researchers concluded that their examination of existing studies suggested a “compelling link” between exposure to glyphosate-based herbicides and the risk of non-Hodgkin lymphoma.
A different study found that of Americans whose urine was tested for glyphosate, 93 percent had the herbicide in their urine. Researchers concluded the exposure was likely linked to food or environmental exposure.
The World Health Organization’s International Agency for Research on Cancer has called glyphosate a “probable human carcinogen.” This was based on a review of studies that examined glyphosate in humans and animals.
