Patients who took prescription weight-loss drug Belviq or Belviq XR face an increased risk of developing pancreatic, lung or colorectal cancer, according to a new study. Meanwhile, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), requested the drug’s maker, Eisai, voluntarily withdraw Belviq and Belviq XR from the market and stop all sales. The FDA made its request after analysis suggested that the risks of Belviq outweigh the benefits.

What is Belviq?
Belviq (lorcaserin) and Belviq XR (extended-release) are weight loss drugs marketed by Eisai. The FDA initially approved lorcaserin for weight loss in 2012, to be used along with a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity. Belviq is a tablet that increases feelings of fullness to curb the amount of food eaten and is prescribed for adults who are obese or overweight and have weight-related health issues.
A study (called CAMELLIA-TIMI 61) that was designed to evaluate the risk of cardiovascular issues linked to lorcaserin found a link between the weight loss drug and an increased risk of cancer, mainly colorectal, pancreatic or lung cancer.
What are the potential Belviq side effects?
Alarmingly, Belviq has been linked to an increased risk of
- Colorectal cancer,
- Pancreatic cancer, and
- Lung cancer
That increased cancer risk was seen in patients who took the weight-loss drug when compared with those who took a placebo.
Additional Beviq side effects include:
- Allergic reaction
- Mood or behavior changes
- Dry eyes
- Vision problems
- Memory problems
- Breast swelling
- Nipple discharge
- Cardiovascular problems
- Respiratory problems
- Serotonin syndrome
- Nervous system problems
- Dry mouth
- Low blood sugar
Have there been a Belviq recall and a Belviq XR recall announced?
Why were Belviq and Belviq XR recalled?
The drugs were recalled after the FDA analyzed the results of a trial that compared patients taking lorcaserin with those who took a placebo. The trial involved more than 12,000 patients over five years. The Belviq study found that patients who took lorcaserin were at an increased risk of pancreatic, colorectal and lung cancer, with the risk increasing the longer the drug was used.
What should I do if I took Belviq or Belviq XR for weight loss?
If you took Belviq or Belviq XR and are concerned about an increased risk of cancer, speak with your doctor to discuss your concerns.
